Other Trucks to Consider

The Ram 1500 has a coil-over rear suspension, and reviewers say this gives it a uniquely comfortable and refined ride. It still offers plenty of towing and hauling capacity, though it gets a new, more powerful base V6 paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission for 2013. Reviewers also say that its top trims are among the most opulent you can get among full-size pickups.

The Ford F-150 is one of the strongest full-size pickup trucks on the market in terms of towing and hauling. It offers four engines, all of which get respectable fuel economy; one of which, a turbocharged V6, offers one of the best power and economy tradeoffs available in the class. Reviewers also like the F-150 for its spacious, well-designed interior and range of trim levels available.

Though its interior falls short of more recently redesigned rivals, reviewers like the 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 for its range of powerful engines and strong towing and hauling capacity.

Most reviewers like the powertrain lineup offered in the GMC Sierra. While they tend to find the base V6 lackluster at best, they agree that any of the three optional V8s have plenty of muscle for towing or hauling. Of the optional V8s, many say the 5.3-liter V8 is the best choice for its balance of power and fuel economy. At 15/21 mpg city/highway with either two- or four-wheel drive, the 5.3-liter is fairly thrifty for the class. The V6 and smallest V8 come with a four-speed automatic transmission, while the two larger V8s get six-speed automatic transmissions, which reviewers prefer. Critics also say that the Sierra 1500 offers a compliant ride and composed handling. They say the Sierra steers fairly accurately, although one notes that it is hard to maneuver in tight spaces, even by full-size truck standards.

Reviewers say that the interior of the 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 is starting to show its age compared with more recently remodeled rivals. The Denali trim offers the most luxury, but even then, some critics say it might not be as luxurious as the top trims found in the Ford F-150 or Ram 1500. The GMC Sierra is available in regular, extended and crew cabs, and can seat from three to six people. Critics say the Sierra 1500’s front seats are comfortable and fairly spacious, and that the crew cab is the better choice for carrying rear passengers than the extended cab, as it offers more space. The base trim is sparsely equipped, with air conditioning, a radio and manual windows, mirrors and door locks. Upper trims offer features like heated power leather seats, a sunroof, navigation, Bluetooth and a Bose stereo. Unlike some rivals, the Sierra is not available with an infotainment system, though critics don’t say this is a bad thing. Rather, most of them report that all of the truck’s interior audio and climate controls are simple and easy to use. Interior storage, according to most reviewers, is okay, but not outstanding.
